Opal is formed when the seasonal rains drench into dry ground in regions such as Australia. Opal exhibits unique display of rainbow colors called play of color. Opal with play of colors is more expensive than the ones in which it is absent. Opal is the birthstone of October.
These opals are either translucent or opaque with play of color against a gray or white background.
